Section C
In order to reach this section, we must first drive ~30 miles to Brown’s Park. This ~13-mile section begins at Indian Crossing, travels two miles past the beautiful Swallow Canyon before entering the state of Colorado. As an Utah guide, I am only permitted to float to the Swallow Canyon ramp. This area is vast and open as the river winds through the beautiful valley filled with cottonwood trees, juniper, and sage. Usually, the temperatures are much higher in the valley since it’s a thousand feet lower in elevation compared to Dutch John. The land is also rich in Native American, pioneer, ranch, and cowboy history. I encourage you to check out John Jarvie ranch, but avoid the Allen ranch. The once barren river banks below Red Creek rapid were full of cattle. Now, invasive tamarisk and russian olive trees compete with the native willows. You may be lucky and come across some wild asparagus on your journey and maybe a moose.
I consider this section to be feast or famine when fishing. Folks are headed to this section for that one brown trout of a lifetime. The trout population is dwarfed in comparison to the number of native whitefish on this stretch. It is rare to see a rainbow on this section.
