Typical Guide Day
Outfitter Permit
This stretch of river resides in Ashley National Forest, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. In addition, the land is managed by the Bureau of Land Management on sections B and C. In order to guide, I run my trips through Trout Creek Flies permit. Please give them a call at 435-885-3355 to officially book a trip with me. Also, make sure you request me at the time of booking.
Typical Guide Day
Ideally, I will contact you two to three days before our trip to discuss details for our day or day(s). This would include meet time, meet location, dietary restrictions, and allergies. I tailor our float based on what you want out of the day, weather conditions, hatches, flows, skill level, raft traffic, and whether or not Red Creek is flooded.
For example, to catch the evening caddis hatch in July, we’d meet at noon and float section A. Or, in April we might meet at 8:30 am to make sure were ready for the BWO hatch on A. To avoid the raft craziness that is every weekend in the summer, I might suggest we meet at 7 am.
I generally meet at Trout Creek Flies. Your vehicle is left at the parking lot. My truck is used to take us to the river and to get us back from the river. Don’t worry, your vehicle is safe while we’re on the water. If you are staying in Dutch John, I can usually pick you up at your lodging and bring you back after our day on the water. I am unable to offer pick-ups or drop-offs at Red Canyon or Flaming Gorge Lodge. Starting in 2025, you’ll no longer see the lucky orange Clemson Clackacraft boat. Instead, you’ll be in a more “discreet” custom purple, Clemson Clackacraft boat. Love you, Mom!

Three Rules to Follow
1. What happens in the orange purple boat, stays in the orange purple boat.
2. One word I never want to hear: “sorry”. If you tangle, hook me, miss a fish, lose a fly, please do not say “sorry”. It has become a trigger word for me. I cannot count all the “sorry”s I’ve received after being hit by a raft.
3. The final rule is truly the only rule. Stay in the boat. I am proud to share that I have never had anyone fall out of my boat. They have certainly lost their balance at times, but they have never ended up in the river. I’d like to keep it that way.
Gear I Offer
Starting in 2025, Orvis’s top of the line Helios 4 rods will be offered.
For dries: Helios 906 F
For streamers: Helios 906 D
For nymphing: Helios 106 D
Each of these rods are equipped with Scientific Angler’s expert lines.
For dries: amplitude textured infinity
For streamers: sonar titan 3D sink either the I/3/5 or 3/5/7 depending on flows
For nymphing: amplitude textured anadro indicator
These lines are spooled on to Sage Spectrum LT reels. I also provide all the necessary tippet, leaders, and flies. I believe in these products so that is why I use them. You are always welcome to bring your own gear as well, including your favorite dry fly rod.
I also provide either a grilled or non-grilled lunch depending on dietary restrictions, allergies, and time of season. I provide a cooler with bottled water, a few cokes and diet cokes. I no longer provide Gatorade. As of 2024, I now offer liquid IV packets to provide electrolytes. I completed a Wilderness First Responder course and my reality was changed!
You are always welcome to bring any additional drinks you’d like as long as they are NOT in glass bottles. Alcohol is permitted within reason.
I will also provide NRS chinook lifejackets that are required on section A as well as the first five miles of section B.
I always encourage you to bring your own rain gear. In case you forget, however, I have you covered, literally, with the durable Grundens rain jackets and bibs.
Gear You Should Bring
A valid (think current) UTAH fishing license either downloaded to the app on your phone or printed
Polarized sunglasses
Sunscreen
Medications
Hat
Rain gear
Camera or phone to take photos
Proper clothes for the current weather
